Rick Owens…YES!!!

So, I was skimming through my Facebook news feed, and came across an article about this designer named, Rick Owens. I admit, I was unfamiliar with him, so I checked out the article, and the wheels in my fashion show production mind have begun turning. New inspiration!!! Talk about breaking the mold!!!

Rick Owens’ Spring Summer 2014 Paris Fashion Week show was AMAZING!!!!! Mr. Owens truly blew my mind of what I expected the stereotypical Paris Fashion Week show to be with:

~ Down-home, southern-style step show choreography

~ Beautiful black models of all colors, shapes, sizes, and hairstyles, sporting full-on, mean mug, Cleo from Set if Off thizz faces while stomping in their tennis shoes

~ Awesome stair staging, with dramatic entrances/exits

~ Concert-style lighting

This show wasn’t about the normal, societal standard of beauty, or fashion. There were no 6 foot, size 0, high cheek-boned models strutting the runway in sky-high stilettos with a face covered in flawless makeup, and carefully structured hairstyles. There was no white “runway” with a slew of models coming & going in different garments. Mr. Owens took these unconventional beauties, with beautiful big eyes, thick thighs, kinky hair, large lips, wide noses, big busts, and sista girl attitudes; and not only did he embrace them, but selected them to be the faces & bodies of this latest fashion collection. What made this great, in my opinion, is that it wasn’t a gimmick used on a platform such as BET’s Rip the Runway, it was a unique, creative performance shown during PARIS FASHION WEEK!!! Paris, y’all!! I loved it!!

I wouldn’t want to see this all of the time, however, it was a refreshing change of pace, and I greatly appreciated it; seeing as though I’m a runway model who appreciates choreo, and carries my own set of HBT (hips, butt & thighs). 😉

Check out the show & comment below to let me know what you think!

P.S. thanks to Ced for posting this article & expanding my mind!!!

The FashioNIKsta Awards: NYFW Spring/Summer 2014

NYFW Spring/Summer 2014…yesss!!! I didn’t get to attend this time around, but I still enjoyed watching the shows online, thanks to Catwalk TV on the Flipboard app on my iPad! 😉

Of the many shows I watched, the following stuck out in my mind: Badgley Mischka, Tory Burch, Nicolita, Christian Siriano, Tommy Hilfiger, Rodarte, Diane von Furstenberg, & Thom Browne.

Below are the designers whose shows made quite an impression on me! I present to you, The FashioNIKsta Awards:

Best Spring/Summer Collection: Badgley Mischka … I would wear every piece! Watch here!

Best Runway (Staging): Tommy Hilfiger … I would LOVE to walk this beach-themed runway! Watch here!

Best Runway Walkers: Diane von Furstenberg … DVF’s models had nice walks & great runway presence! Plus, the great Naomi Campbell made an appearance!! So cool! Watch here!

Most Unique Runway Theme: Thom Browne … Definitely the most interestingly different runway show by far! Watch here!

LA Fashion Week…here we come!

RIP Natural Nik

Why did I decide to go natural?

1. To try something new

2. To save money from going to the hair shop every 2 weeks

What did I learn by going natural?

1. It’s A LOT of work

2. Sponge rollers are BAD NEWS!!

3. There are so many different products for different types of hair – must try so many different things to see what works best for me.

4. How to flat twist

5. About protective styling

6. I could never make my hair look exactly the same, even if I prepped it the same

What did I lose by going natural?

MY HAIR!!!!! 🙁

I have no idea what I did in 4 months…or if my hair just couldn’t take it. However, I’m putting away all of my natural hair products, and I’m going back to the hair shop so that my hair will grow back. I’m done with natural hair. Bring on the heat. I would have done a video, but you may have seen me shed a tear.

I’ll admire you natural beauties from afar. Now, to planning some hair growth…

RIP Natural Nik.

RIP Long hair.

Fit Nik: Float Like a Butterfly…

So…I’ve been spending a lot of time boxing. No, I’m not becoming a boxer, or starting street fights; I’m taking a boxing fitness class at the gym. The class is taught by my friend, Derrick Cox, and I love it!! If I’m not working, or out of town, you’ll find me in class 3x a week, getting my box on! Check me out in class!

SHEEQ & Sassy!!

SHEEQ COSMETICS: my new favorite foundation/powder & bright orange lip gloss!! I’ve been using it now for a little over 2 months. The powder gives great coverage, and I love the fact that I can wet a sponge & use it as liquid foundation as well. Versatility at its best! I’m trying new things with bright lips, so this highly pigmented orange gloss is right up my alley & perfect for summer! I make everyday a SHEEQ COSMETICS day!

The line was designed by fabulous make up artist & image consultant, Melissa Hibbert. Not only is she absolutely gorgeous, but she is a sweetheart! Definitely a style & beauty expert that I admire. Check out her YouTube page here!

Summer Makeover

GROWTH. One of a few words that I’ve spent a lot of time focusing on recently. Other key words of focus:

DREAMS Sweet Kiss

I’m using the summer of 2013 to grow stronger spiritually, emotionally, financially, physically, and career-wise. Through prayer, mentorship classes, working out, networking, and hard work, I expect to accomplish my 2013 goals. Watch my growth by following my progress here on my site, and following me on twitter & IG.

BELIEVE & RECEIVE!! I’m super excited to see where I will be on December 31, 2013, in comparison to where I was on January 1, 2013. We shall see…and I’m expecting excellence!!

Stay RiNIKulous & See You on the Runway (of my dreams)!!

Runway Workshops!!

Runway Walking Workshop – June 8, 2013

I held my very first runway walking workshop (unrelated to a scheduled runway show) on Saturday, June 8th. It was a success, and we had a blast! Thank you to all of the models to attended! Don’t miss the next workshop in August!

Desert Stylist – BTS

I’ve styled a few photo shoots, but by no means do I consider myself to be a stylist. So, I had a blast on our girls’ road trip to Apple Valley to shoot with photographer, Fidel Gonzalez, for the Evolution of Urbana photo shoot. Awesome location with an amazing natural breeze! (No wind machines were used in the capture of these images!) Check out some of these behind the scenes photos!!…and this is only what I’ve selected to share!!!
