Runway Monday…runway walking tips for dummies!! Check in every Monday for fashion show pointers from Yours Truly!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: CONFIDENCE IS KEY!!! Don’t be afraid, everyone will see your fear….See You on the Runway!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Stay in your lane!!! Traffic on the runway is like traffic on the street. Avoid a catwalk collision by staying to the right (unless partner walking/choreography is involved).
RUNWAY MONDAY: Give ’em the Money Shot!! Hold your pose for at least 3 seconds (no more than 5) at the tip of the runway so you, the designer & the photographer can all get that money shot… See You on the Runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Pocket rules – gently place your hands in the pockets of the garment while strutting to the tip of the runway. It not only shows off an asset of the designer piece, but becomes an additional spot for hand placement….See You on the Runway!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY (NYFW Edition): Attention fashion week models!! A hand on hip should be strong & intentional (right), not loose & sloppy (left). Place the hand in the upper hip area right below the waist. See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: And the award goes to…..Sometimes a little runway drama and/or choreography goes a long way. It can be entertaining, highlight garment features, and create a “wow” moment for the designer, model & photographer. Please note, use in moderation….See You on the Runway.
RUNWAY MONDAY: Remember the 3P’s when strutting the catwalk – Poise, Posture, & Presence. These are all 3 key ingredients to a strong walk. See you on the runway!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Audition Edition – don’t psyche yourself out by comparing yourself to the competition when auditioning for a show. Know what you bring in your walk & STRUT!! Only you can do YOU!!…See you on the runway.
RUNWAY MONDAY: Eyes up!! Never look down while walking the runway. The ground isn’t going anywhere! Focus your eyes forward & look ahead for traffic, & stopping point at the end of the stage…See you on the runway!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Get your cross step on!! Walk one foot in front of the other with an extended stride…See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: LAFW Edition – A long runway is a confident model’s dream!! Just remember to do a pre-show walk thru with the shoes you will be wearing for the show to test the slickness of the runway, and be aware of any issues that may arise: cracks, stairs, obstacles to walk around…See you on the runway!! S/O to @twinof_a_kind for this pic!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Model Feature – S/O to runway model @braylenbrooks using #runwaymonday tips in this fabulous photo!! Thanks @braylenbrooks!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Catwalk Catastrophe!! If you happen to fall, trip, stumble on the runway KEEP GOING!! The show must go on! My advice, play it off! Everyone already saw it, so smile, shake it off & keep going. The audience will appreciate & may even applaud your resilience…See you on the runway!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: I will be runway coaching at the upcoming @philthyragz fashion show this Sunday, April 21!! 6 days & counting…See You on the Runway!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Posture Perfect!! Good posture is another element to a strong runway walk. Chin up! Chest up! Shoulders back! Hips forward! See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: A fashion show finale is a last look at the models in key garments, which typically involves each model following each other down the runway in either a U or zipper exit. DO NOT stop the flow of the finale line trying to shine!!!…See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Partner Struts!! Walking with 1 or more models on the runway is common. If it’s not already choreographed, make sure to establish something with your walking partners to ensure a strong presence on stage. Timing & sync are key!!! See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: The runway begins backstage!! Don’t wait until you hit the stage to prep your 3P’s (poise, posture & presence), the audience will see the transformation! You must do it before you hit the stage & begin your signature walk because you need to be on point as soon as the lights hit you!…See you on the runway!!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Muscle Mania!! For the guys who need to show skin on the runway, pump out a few push ups & crunches before you hit the stage. It’ll give an extra pop to your biceps & abs…See you on the runway!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Male Models – men don’t need to do much at the tip of the runway. Just give us a strong 3 second pose & hit 3 steps back before turning to exit…See you on the runway!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Shoe Game!! Only bring shoes that you can comfortably walk in for a fashion show. If shoes are provided, make sure to walk the runway in those shoes prior to the show & get as comfy as possible wearing them. See you on the runway!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Eye line – unsure where to look while on the catwalk? Find a spot in the back of the room & focus there, but don’t lose the life in your eyes!! See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Atypical Runways – Atypical runways bring a different element to the models, photographers & spectators. Walk the path as directed & stop to pose in indicated areas. Don’t forget to find the photographers for the money shots!! See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Walk with Intent!! Walk with purpose, like you’re on a mission. This, along with the 3P’s, an extended stride & good face exude confidence & professionalism. See you in the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Catwalk Bag Walk – when carrying purses, briefcases, satchels, etc. hold them low & to the side with minimal movement & out of the way of your stride. See you on the runway!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Mark your calendar! I will be coaching the models for the @yeredesigns charitable fashion show on July 20th!! Get your tix today!! Designs by @chichi_ibekwe. See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Exit Strategy – Focus forward & keep your body open to the audience & cameras with a smooth backwards step to exit (i.e. side pivot & step back, or 3 steps back) rather than immediately turning your back & closing yourself off to the world. See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Practice Perfect – Practice your tip poses & exits in front of the mirror. Critique yourself (eyes, mouth, hands, posture), & make adjustments. Does your face read mean or bored? Unsure where to place hands? Be prepared for catwalk photos. See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Beware of Stairs! When climbing/descending stairs to enter/exit the stage, walk while lightly holding the banister. DO NOT LOOK DOWN!! If you must glance to see how many steps are remaining, look with just your eyes, while keeping your face up & forward. See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: fashion show hair & makeup can be very dramatic!! When dressing use a cloth to cover your face to avoid getting makeup on the clothes & try your best to save your hair! See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Tick Check!! What are you doing with your face, eyes & arms while strutting the catwalk? Make sure you’re not biting your lip, walking with one arm swinging harder than the other, or have wandering eyes. Leave your nervous ticks backstage! Tip: best way to catch them is to watch yourself on video…See you on the runway!
RUNWAY MONDAY: know your role!! What mood will you portray on the runway? Fun & flirty? Sexy? Attitude? Go with designer/show producer recommendations, or check the garment & set the appropriate mood in your walk & face…See You on the Runway!
RUNWAY MONDAY: What’s in your model bag? Keep the essentials: at least 1 pair of shoes (preferably black), neutral colored undergarments, clear deodorant, wipes, a face guard to protect clothes from makeup, & of course a few zeds!! See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: make sure to arrive to the venue ready – clean face, body & hair, neutral nails, appropriately shaved, and unscented. No one can smell you from the runway & the designer doesn’t want to smell your scent on the garments after you wear them…See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Backstage Etiquette – Models, be very careful with designer garments!! At times a dresser will assist with quick changes, but be aware that you could be found responsible for rips, tears, broken zippers, etc. You break, you buy…See you on the runway!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Accessories!!! Just like designer garments, designer accessories must be treated with care. Be careful not to snap, or break them, snag the designer clothes with the accessories, and definitely don’t go home with them still on!! See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Gowns!! It takes skill to have a smooth stride/exit when modeling long garments with lots of fabric on a runway. To keep from getting caught up in a long train or big skirt, use 1 or more of the following tricks: 1. Keep moving by walking a “U” at the tip, 2. Hold & move the garment with each step to keep it from tripping on it, 3. Exit the tip with a kick out or French turn to move the fabric out of the way before stepping back. See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: HUGE RiNIKulous shout out to designer, Rick Owens, for this spectacular fashion week show!! Southern step meets the runway…Bravo!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Pattern Walking – it is extremely important when pattern walking to keep the pattern & keep the timing, otherwise the entire visual effect will be ruined!! See you on the runway!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Catwalk Catastrophe part II – wardrobe malfunction on the runway? Do your best to gracefully adjust the garment back into place, without forgetting the 3P’s! Remember, eyes & cameras are still watching! See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: “More bounce to the ounce” works when dancing, but there should be less bounce when on the runway. The key to a smooth, bounce-less walk is to focus on the dropping of the foot & sinking into the hip rather than the lifting of the knees. See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Finish Strong – the work is not done once you leave the tip of the runway. When exiting, keep up with the 3P’s, extended stride & intentional walk until you arrive backstage. See you on the runway!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Crowded Catwalks – Remember to stay focused when walking a runway during a live dance, singing, or other performance. Know your walking path, and stay out of the way of the performers, while keeping active stage presence! See you on the runway!!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: What to wear under there – wear smooth, nude, or black colored undergarments when modeling in a runway show. Your baggy, bright green boxers & bikini briefs are unacceptable!!! See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Can’t Sit Here! (Backstage Etiquette) – Once dressed in the runway garment, DO NOT SIT!!! The designer would not appreciate wrinkled garments coming down the runway, especially after all the time spent to steam & prepare them for the show. See you on the runway!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Make sure to moisturize with unscented lotion before show time, but do not lotion the bottom of your feet if wearing heels. This will decrease the grip the foot has on the shoe & will cause the feet to slip while standing/walking. Plus, toes hanging over the front of open toed shoes are an eye sore! See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Eye Spy – Eyes are key to presence on the runway (1 of the 3Ps). Dead eyes = dead face, which leads to lack of runway presence. Work on expressing emotions through the eyes when practicing at home.
RUNWAY MONDAY: Hip is hip! – most women walk with a natural sway of the hips, so a smooth hip movement is welcomed on the runway. Please note: exaggerated hips could be seen as too urban or more sassy than classy. Make sure to research the designer who will be showcasing to determine the amount of hip to use when walking…See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: The Last Goodbye – switch up the tip exit with a quick over the shoulder glance back to the audience. It works a great for both guys and gals!…See you on the runway!!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: only the lower body (legs, hips & minimal arm swing) should be moving while strutting the runway. No need to sway the head and/or shoulders with each step. Stay posture perfect!! See you on the runway!!
RUNWAY MONDAY: Runway Funway – Despite the many Runway Monday tips that have been given, one thing to always remember: HAVE FUN!!! Don’t think so hard that all runway presence is lost. See you on the runway!!
