Shoes Made for Struttin’!

Shoes … they’re a great addition to every outfit! However, when hitting the catwalk, it’s important to have the right shoes (unless provided by the designer). Here are my tips for choosing the right shoes for the runway.

  • 3 to 5-Inch Heels are Best – Unless you’re a young girl, the kitten heel isn’t sexy. However, 6-inch stilettos are not ideal. The higher the heel, the more it affects your walk. In general, 3 to 5-inches is a good range that gives the right look without hindering your strut.

  • Ankle Support Scores – A simple strap around the ankle can keep your heels from slipping out of the shoe. Simple ankle support is key, 1 buckle, or 1 zipper up the back to minimize time needed to put on or remove shoes.

  • Simple & Strappy Stilettos – Simple strappy stilettos are always winners! They can be worn with party dresses, gowns, slacks, swimwear … they’re universal! But not too strappy that they distract from the garment. Also, stay away from wedges.

  • Neutral Colors – Have a solid stiletto heel in black, nude, silver, and gold, and you’re set! Some designers may request a colorful shoe, however you can’t go wrong with these basics.

  • Platforms – Platforms are definitely not necessary, but they provide extra support on the ball of the foot that comes in handy if you’ll be standing/walking same shoes for a long period of time.

What to Stay Away From …

  • Too high heels
  • Multiple buckles/ties
  • Slippery/hard to walk in
  • Gaudy/distracting designs
  • Extreme platforms
  • Wedges

My Runway Tips vs. Naomi Campbell

When I think about a supermodel, Naomi Campbell is the first name that comes to mind. She is known for her walk, so let’s put her up against my regular runway technique tips.

Naomi Campbell rocks the runway

First thing I notice when I watch Naomi is that she walks with intent. She has a lot of life throughout her body and face.

She walks at an even pace with a long stride.

The movement is in the even sway of her arms, and her consistent strut – not in her head and shoulders.

She uses her pockets!

She stops at the tip for her photos. (Although I instruct models to stay for 3 sec, Naomi doesn’t spend much time there.)

She’s confident, and having fun!

Comment below and let me know what you think of Naomi’s runway walk. Until next week … see you on the runway!

NTG Representing from LA to LA!!

LA Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2015 was awesome!! Beautiful designs, and of course NIKOL Talent Group models were everywhere!!

Art Hearts Fashion and Style Fashion Week are the two biggest LA Fashion Week events every season. Last season in October, we were able to book 14 models in 3 different events. This season, we booked 8 models in 3 different events: LA Fashion Council, Art Hearts Fashion, and Le Petite Cirque Circus Couture, an exclusive event by Nickii Jean Magazine. I always enjoy attending shows to support NTG models!!!!

Behind the scenes, I was working hard representing NTG on the Nickii Jean Magazine event. It began with the audition I hosted, where we had over 50 models attend! Then as we got closer to show time, I ran rehearsals with the models, taught some NTG choreography for two fashion installations, and cued the models backstage during the show. Special thanks to Tina Summers and Nickii Jean for inviting me to come on in this role once again for them during LA Fashion Week. It’s always a pleasure working with them, and I’m super excited to do it again in October!! Woop!

I also had the opportunity to travel with NTG Client, SkinTone Clothing, to New Orleans, Louisiana for New Orleans Fashion Week to do runway coaching & runway choreography. Just like when I worked NYFW, it was so exciting to see a fashion event in another city, and how they run things. The New Orleans models were awesome! I only spent about an hour with them, teaching them choreography: partner walking, pattern walking, and the individual mood I wanted them to portray on the runway. They all seemed to be very excited about the choreo, and caught on quickly. Working backstage, I didn’t get to watch the scene, but the feedback from the attendees was all positive! Plus, NTG models Spencer & Ieva came out to New Orleans to walk in the show, and really added that extra flair that we needed! I was so excited that they were able to make it out! I’m so proud of them! They represented NTG so well! We brought LA (Los Angeles) to LA (Louisiana)!! Bravo to SkinTone Clothing and all of the models for an amazing show!

Now, I can officially say that NIKOL Talent Group has made its mark on LA, New York, & now New Orleans Fashion Weeks!!! …on to the next city!! Pics below…

Progress: Before & After Runway Coaching Sessions

My most recent runway coaching student, is a young aspiring runway model seeking to break into the fashion industry. After attending a few auditions, and walking in a few shows, she determined that she would like to invest in her career by seeking runway training. She came to me for assistance in perfecting her runway walk. After 5 private coaching sessions, she has made much progress. Here are a few things we worked on:

  • Posture
  • Stride length
  • Intent
  • Presence/Mood/Facial Expressions
  • Walk Control
  • Arm Control
  • Core stability
  • Foot placement
  • Entering/Exiting the Runway
  • Balance
  • Tip Options

Practice makes perfect! Not only was she willing and open to critique, but she practiced between sessions. The more she practices what was taught, and gets the muscle memory, the better walker she will become! Congrats to you, for your present improvement, and future growth!

Check out her progress below; before: center, after: sides.
